Editors' Foreword 2018

The creative arts — literary, performative, visual, and beyond — leave much to the sensibilities of the critic. The critic sifts through the infinite insights of the creator, who uses lies to create greater truths. Each and every one of us is the critic and the creator. We fervently pursue the truths hidden in the arts and the truths yet to be.

Sometimes, these truths are open for the naked eye to behold, to celebrate their universal wisdom, or to weep at their tragic reality.

No matter their contents, these truths are what keep us grounded, keep us human, keep us in the pursuit for more.

But more often than not, these truths are embroidered in the greater tapestry of the creative arts, where seams of subtle subtext lie waiting to be unpicked.

“The truth is rarely pure and never simple.”

-Oscar Wilde

We at Unwrap believe that the truths the creative arts hold should be accessible to all. Our goal is simple but not simplistic — to unravel these truths, unearth them in all their glory, and distil them to taste their inner sweetness. In this special inaugural edition of Unwrap, we hope that our creators, our critics, will inspire you with their insights, and, perhaps, unwrap another layer from the gift creative arts give us.
